In January 2022, Neurotech announced the retirement of Kneehab XP in the European market in favour of the more versatile MediStim XP.
For many years, Kneehab XP provided a highly specialised approach to quadriceps rehabilitation, particularly following knee injury and surgery. MediStim XP builds on this established use of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), while offering users and healthcare professionals a much broader and more flexible rehabilitation system.
Importantly for existing Kneehab users and clinicians familiar with its treatment approach, MediStim XP retains the same three NMES programmes found on Kneehab XP, while adding five further NMES programmes together with TENS pain management. This allows one compact device to support a considerably wider range of rehabilitation and treatment requirements.
A More Flexible Approach to Rehabilitation
Unlike Kneehab XP, which was principally designed around the quadriceps and used a dedicated garment, MediStim XP uses individually positioned adhesive electrodes. This provides much greater flexibility over where treatment can be applied and enables the system to support rehabilitation across different areas of the body.
MediStim XP can therefore be used for much more than knee and quadriceps rehabilitation. Its applications include muscle re-education and strengthening, neurological rehabilitation, shoulder, back and hip rehabilitation, management of disuse atrophy and muscle spasm, and support for joint stability and range of motion.
For users progressing through rehabilitation, this also means the device is not restricted to one particular joint or stage of recovery. The same MediStim XP controller can be used with appropriately selected electrodes to meet different treatment requirements, subject to the device instructions and guidance of the user’s healthcare professional where applicable.
Designed Around the Individual User
One of the biggest advantages of MediStim XP is its adaptability. Rather than supplying every user with the same fixed electrode arrangement, Recovery Muscle offers a range of electrode sizes and configurations, allowing the system to be better matched to the area being treated and the individual user’s rehabilitation needs.
For example, our quadriceps-specific MediStim XP kit combines different electrode sizes for targeted quadriceps treatment, while the wider MediStim range can support numerous other rehabilitation applications.
Despite this additional versatility, MediStim XP remains designed to be straightforward to operate. It features simple push-button controls, a clear digital display and pre-set treatment programmes, helping make structured NMES therapy accessible outside the clinic as well as under professional supervision.
NMES Rehabilitation and TENS Pain Management in One Device
MediStim XP also introduces something Kneehab XP did not provide: TENS pain management alongside NMES muscle rehabilitation.
NMES is used to stimulate muscle contraction and support the re-education and strengthening of weakened or immobilised muscles. The additional TENS functionality provides a drug-free option for managing pain, meaning MediStim XP can support different aspects of a user’s rehabilitation within a single portable device.
This combination makes MediStim XP suitable for a much broader range of users—from somebody rebuilding quadriceps strength following knee surgery to users requiring neurological muscle re-education or rehabilitation of other muscle groups.
Supporting Treatment at Home and in the Clinic
MediStim XP has been designed for use in both clinical and home environments, helping users continue consistent treatment away from appointments as part of their wider rehabilitation programme.

For existing Kneehab XP users, the move to MediStim XP does not mean leaving NMES rehabilitation behind. Instead, it provides access to the familiar core programmes alongside considerably greater flexibility for different rehabilitation needs.
