What’s the Difference Between TENS and NMES?

TENS and NMES both use controlled electrical stimulation delivered through electrodes placed on the skin, but they are designed to achieve different therapeutic goals.

Pain Management

TENS

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

TENS primarily stimulates sensory nerves. It is used to help manage pain by influencing how pain signals are processed by the nervous system.

Producing a strong muscle contraction is not the main aim of TENS therapy.

NMES

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

NMES primarily stimulates motor nerves, causing the targeted muscle to contract.

How TENS Works for Pain Management

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It uses controlled electrical pulses delivered through electrodes placed on the skin.

These pulses stimulate sensory nerves in the treatment area. TENS is used to help manage pain by influencing how pain signals are processed by the nervous system. The aim is pain relief rather than producing a strong muscle contraction.

What Does TENS Feel Like?

NMES stands for Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation. It uses controlled electrical impulses delivered through electrodes placed on the skin to stimulate the nerves responsible for activating muscles.

By stimulating motor nerves, NMES produces controlled muscle contractions. These contractions can support muscle activation, re-education, rehabilitation and strengthening where appropriate.

What Does NMES Feel Like?
